KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Western Michigan University’s football team has announced that senior quarterback Jon Wassink is being awarded with the Wuerffel Trophy.
The announcement came out in a tweet sent out from the team’s Twitter account on the morning of Tuesday, December 10th. The Wuerffel trophy is presented each year to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who dedicates themselves to community service, and demonstrates excellance both academically and athletically.
Wassink has volunteered as a leader at the youth-mentoring center Tree of Life, as a regular mentor at Indian Lake Elementary School, and holds weekly bible studies with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The Grand Rapids native is currently enrolled in the Haworth College of Business, and is majoring in accounting with a 3.95 GPA. He’s been named a two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and a finalist for the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy this season.
The Wuerffel honor was previously awarded to WMU’s Tim Hiller in 2009, making the university just one of two programs in the country to have multiple winners.
