PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A man is facing several charges after breaking into a Portage residence and attempting to kidnap on woman.
Portage Public Safety officers were dispatched at 12:52 A.M. Friday, December 6th, for a welfare check after calls of a woman reportedly being held against her will.
At the scene they learned a suspect, 28-year-old Cody Staffeld, had broken into a residence on Tudor Circle and threatened the woman and one other female with a knife. He then forced the victim into his vehicle before driving off.
Police located Staffeld’s vehicle near Mall Drive and South Westnedge Avenue and attempted a traffic stop. When the vehicle failed to stop, officers followed them before the car struck several curbs, causing all four tires to deflate near South Westnedge Avenue and Garden Lane.
The suspect attempted to flee on foot before becoming physically combative with police. After being subdued by officers the suspect was eventually taken into custody.
Staffeld is being charged by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office with several criminal counts including kidnapping, two counts of unlawful imprisonment, fleeing and eluding arrest, and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
He’s being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail on a $250,000 bond, as well as a parole hold from the Michigan Department of Corrections.
One Portage police officer suffered minor injuries during the interaction with Staffeld and was treated at Bronson Hospital before being released.
Investigators say they believe that Staffeld had a prior relationship with one of the two female victims involved in the incident.
The name and status of the woman involved in the attempted kidnapping has not been released.
