PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Authorites seized a large supply of the dangerous drug fentanyl after pulling over a suspicious vehicle in Van Buren County.
Michigan State Police say they pulled over a vehicle driving on I-94 on Thursday, December 5th during a traffic stop, and found three kilograms of the synthetic opioid in the possession of the driver.
The 23-year-old male driver was questioned by troopers before being arrested and lodged in jail. A female passenger was apprehended but then released from custody.
Police say both the driver and passenger were originally from California. They did not say whether they were planning on selling the supply in Michigan or another location.
In a press release, Capt. Michael Brown, commander of MSP’s Fifth District said “The amount of fentanyl involved in this case is alarming and typical of what we see day to day.”
The three kilograms of the drug foind equal out to about three million doses. Fentanyl has traditionally been used for medical care, but in recent years it has become an often lethal alternative to heroin and painkillers on the illicit drug market due to it’s high potency.
Michigan State Police say the suspected driver is facing pending charges.
