ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Citizens of Allegan County concerned about flooding will be able to learn more about flood risks through an open house this week.
On Thursday, December 5th, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Allegan County will both host a Flood Risk Open House to the public.
The purpose of the open house is to provide Allegan County residents with an opportunity to learn more about their updated flood maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).
Residents will be able to locate their property on the new map and learn about the flood zone for that area. Members of the project team, flood insurance professionals, and state officials will be available to answer questions.
Allegan County officials say that flooding is the number one natural disaster in the United States, stressing that people outside of high-risk areas also need to be prepared.
Property owners are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to understand their risk and take steps to protect their families and property, including flood insurance possibilities.
The Open House is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 5th from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Allegan District Library.
The library is located at 331 Hubbard Street, Allegan, MI 49010.
