DOWAGIAC, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police in Dowagiac are reporting that a shooting landed a 14-year-old in the hospital Sunday morning.
Around 11:30 a.m., police were contacted by Ascension Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac to report a 14-year-old victim with a gunshot wound.
The victim claimed to be sitting on the floor of a living room in an apartment at Vineyard Place Apartments. The victim heard a loud noise and realized that they had been shot in the foot.
Police later received information on a suspect who had left the area. The suspect later turned himself in when a deputy made contact with him.
The male suspect claimed that he was handling the handgun and accidently fired it into the floor of an upstairs bedroom of the apartment, which then struck the victim.
Dowagiac Police recovered the weapon, as well as other evidence from the scene, and arrested the suspect.
Police are not releasing the name of the suspect at this time. Dowagiac Police describe him as a 23-year-old Cassopolis man. He is being held on charges for Assault With a Dangerous Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Firearm.
He is currently lodged at the Cass County Jail.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
