VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office has announced that one of their officers has completed a local corrections officer training academy program.
Police say that Corrections Officer Dawn Kelly completed the four-week program held at the KVCC Law Enforcement Training Center.
The program offers training in the following subjects:
- Custody and security
- defensive tactics
- first aid (including CPR and AED procedures)
- suicide awareness
- fire safety
- interpersonal communications
“Congratulations to our graduate Dawn Kelly who is dedicated to learning important skills and furthering her education in order to safely and effectively manage our inmate population,” County Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott said. “The training helps our corrections officers develop and practice the tools necessary to be successful in a high stress environment.”
The academy is certified by the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council.
Officials say that the program is an important element of providing the necessary skills for maintaining a safe, secure environment for correction officers, inmates and county residents.
