KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A new student organization group will be working to help expand more teachers of color at Western Michigan University.
The group, Future Teachers of Color, is founded by graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools, and is meant to help support African American teachers at the university. It is believed that having more African American teachers will help more African American Students.
The group hopes to help inspire students of color who are interested in a teaching career, as well as increase the amount of teachers of color in general.
The group was launched earlier this Fall and currently hosts over 20 members.
Meanwhile, on the side of Kalamazoo Public Schools, another new group has been launched to help inspire students interested in a teaching career.
The group, Young Educators Society, will see expansion to middle and elementary schools in the future.
