KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Statistics compiled by a Michigan State police bureau show Kalamazoo County having more auto theft than other counties in the state.
The MSP Auto Theft Prevention Authority compiled data and issued a report on auto theft in 2018. The report shows Kalamazoo County has the fifth-highest theft rate for vehicles in Michigan.
Other information in the report places Michigan as a whole 10th in the country for auto theft.
One suprising finding shows that theives seem to be targeting older vehicles. According to the report the most commonly stolen car in the state is a 2004 Chevrolet Impala.
Even though Michigan ranks among the states with the highest theft, data compiled by the MSP show rates decreasing overall between 2007-2017.
State police officials are also warning drivers about leaving there vehicles on to warm them up. They say that makes them easy targets for thieves.
Authorities are advising drivers to take steps to avoid having their vehicle stolen, including parking near well-lit areas and not leaving valuable items in plain sight.
