PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage has announced plans for a new FedEx distribution center at 6701 Portage Road.
The site of the new center is owned by Scannell Properties, but officials have confirmed the development of the new center.
The site has previously been identified as contaminated due to chemical applications from Pfizer. The area was labeled as a brownfield site in 2014.
The $25 million project was confirmed by Portage officials during a meeting last month and is expected to create over 700 jobs with the potential for over 150 contract employees.
Kalamazoo County Commissioners voted to formally approve the plan during a meeting Wednesday night.
Commissioner Stephanie Moore says that projects like this are beneficial for the Kalamazoo County community.
“If we can do better about attracting economic development and making sure that the outcome of that is jobs, good, paying living-wage jobs, that’s how we’re gonna move the needle here in Kalamazoo County, and that’s what we really need to do,” Moore said.
Now that the project has been formally approved, the site is expected to be open by July 2021.
