KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Western Michigan University has announced that its third annual Giving Day raised over $1.5 million in donations this year, which took place on October 9.
The purpose of Giving Day is to boost the impact of giving by raising money for scholarships, technology advancements, and more during a 24-hour donation cycle.
According to an official press release, the event is led by the WMU Alumni Association, which was recently re-instated by the school’s Office of University Advancement.
“People are talking about WMU, and on Giving Day especially, they were talking about giving to WMU,” said Vice President for University Advancement Kristen DeVries. “Giving is just the tool. It’s the impact that we care about. Giving magnifies our ability to transform the lives of our students so they can transform the communities where they live, all around the globe.”
The press release notes that over 2,000 donors contributed to more than 330 of the 2000 available funds at the university. In total, donations came out to $1,555,471.
“This campaign is about something bigger than us,” DeVries said. “It’s about the impact we can have regionally, statewide, nationwide and globally; whether it’s working to solve the opioid crisis or fostering job creation in Kalamazoo.”
WMU officials say that the participation level surged by 391% compared to last years’ Giving Day.
