KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The election is November 5th and Kalamazoo City officials are reminding homeowners about the rules pertaining to political yard signs.
They posted the above photo on their social media pages showing that the proper campaign sign in a residential district cannot exceed 4.5 square feet, cannot be placed in a public right-of-way without a sign permit, and must be removed within 30-days after the election.
On the City of Kalamazoo’s website they explain the right-of-way as, “On streets with sidewalks, the right-of-way generally extends from the center of the street to the house side of the sidewalk. On streets with no public sidewalk, the right-of-way typically extends 33 feet from the center of the road.”
The City Code of Ordinances also states, “Unless expressly permitted by the City Commission, it shall be unlawful for any person to place, fasten or put, or cause to be placed, fastened or put any advertisement, poster, sign, handbill or placard of any kind upon anything belonging to the City or upon anything which exists on or in City property, including alleys, streets, parks or rights-of-way…”
Anyone who is unclear about the proper sign placement ordinance can call the City of Kalamazoo’s Right-of-Way Coordinator at (269) 337-8436 for more information.
More information can be found at the city’s website. The election for Mayor and the City Commission is on November 5th.
