LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The feeling last spring of bipartisanship in Lansing as lawmakers and Governor Whitmer worked out auto insurance reform legislation is gone following the battle over the state budget.
While Whitmer is asking the Republican-led state Legislature to pass a supplemental measure to patch the state’s budget, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey told the Detroit Free Press he’s afraid the budget is done. “Supplementals are always under consideration. I’m not saying never, but right now the budget is done.”
Shirkey also told the Free Press that Whitmer did not help her relationship with legislators following her 147 line item vetoes.
Whitmer says the budget that went into effect on Tuesday needs to be revised and she wants add funding to three departments to protect public health and safety.
Whitmer ran for Governor on a promise to fix Michigan’s roads but cut $375 million that would have been used for road and bridge repairs. Shirkey says he is still scratching his head on that action.
