KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners is welcoming a new member representing District 2.
Tuesday night, the board swore in Zach Bauer, who works for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).
“What’s all the same between these different demographics is they deserve to have representation,” Bauer said. “They deserve to have someone that’s committed to coming to these meetings and being in the community so that their voices are heard. The government that’s closest to your every day life is really the most important.”
Bauer says one of his goals is to focus on affordable housing.
“We need to create a community that’s attractive in and of itself, and that means developing an affordable housing base that has different options for people who would move to this community.”
Another of Bauer’s goals is to improve the care of veterans in the Kalamazoo area.
“What we’re currently offering veterans in our community, it’s necesarry, it’s important work and the people in that office are working hard,” Bauer said. “Nothing here today should be seen as me disparaging their work, but it’s not sufficient.”
Bauer’s term begins immediately. He is replacing former commissioner Paul Haag, who stepped down from his position last month.
