KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a very realistic phone scam.
They say a Portage resident received a call that showed it was from the sheriff’s office and the scammer, who gave an actual law enforcement person’s name, claimed that the potential victim had pending charges for contempt of court with a fine of $3600.
The caller then said that the person could pay at the sheriff’s office after 6:00 p.m. by bringing cash and 2 pieces of identification.
After further investigating, real deputies realized that the number on the caller ID was spoofed to look like the actual sheriff office’s number.
Sheriff Richard Fuller is reminding residents that no law enforcement agency would contact someone asking them to bring cash to pay fines, especially afterhours.
If a citizen receives a call like this call the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269-383-8748 or your local department.
