KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners is narrowing down their pool of candidates for their vacant District 2 seat, but not by much.
At a board meeting on Tuesday they discussed 8 potential commissioners and agreed on interviewing 7 of them at their special meeting on October 1st.
The selected candidates are: Peter Aranda, Zac Bauer, John Garry, Richard Hamann, Monteze Morales, Meg Tang, and Kate Yancho.
The only candidate excluded from the process was Dave Burgess, a former Comstock Township Trustee, because candidates must live and be registered to vote for 30-days prior to running for office.
Board Chair Julie Rogers says they spoke with County Clerk Tim Snow who explained that Burgess has only been registered to vote since September 16th, meaning he will not fulfill the 30-day rule.
The vacancy comes after District 2 Commissioner Paul Haag suddenly resigned over concerns that he was not living in the district.
The district encompasses the Southside, Edison, Milwood, and parts of the Vine Neighborhood.
After much debate a third and final motion to interview everyone but Burgess was approved.
Interviews will begin October 1st at 2:45 p.m. and the next commissioner could be selected that evening.
