UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Alliance for the Great Lakes will be hosting the annual Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup day this weekend all across the Great Lakes region.
Each year, thousands of volunteers gather on beaches across all five of the great lakes in order to remove litter and waste from the environment.
Data is also collected to assess what types of waste are left behind on beaches. According to an official press release, More than 85% of the beach litter collected by volunteers each year is made up fully or in part of plastic.
The press release also notes that the cleanup events are held as part of the International Coastal Cleanup, a global event.
Although the main cleanup day will occur on Saturday, volunteers can schedule events during other days of the weekend.
Interested participants can look at different events online by area or create their own beach cleanup event.
In Western Michigan, events scheduled across varying days include cleanups in the beaches of South Haven, Coloma, Benton Harbor, and St. Joseph, among others.
A full list of scheduled events, as well as information on how to sign up, can be found online at http://greatlakesadopt.org/.
