KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Western Michigan University is enhancing the way it notifies students and staff of potentially dangerous situations.
As of September 10, all will receive alerts and advisories both on and off campus.
This change in security protocol comes as a number of students complained of receiving no notice of a shooting which took place near campus August 30 in which three people were injured, none of which were students at WMU.
“The reason we did this is because we got feedback that there was a little bit of confusion, and we hold public safety as our top priority,” said Tony Proudfoot, Western Michigan University’s vice president for marketing and strategic Communications. “So we thought this would be a way to enhance our communication with the community.”
The university’s public safety department issues alerts and advisories over text and email regarding crime and emergency situations.
