LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday, the Trump Administration and the FDA announced that they will be preparing a ban on flavored e-cigarette products.
The move comes following a recent State-wide ban of these products in Michigan by Governor Whitmer, which was issued after a series of lung-related illnesses linked to vaping broke out in Michigan and elsewhere in the country.
“I’m glad this administration is doing the right thing and following Michigan’s lead to ban flavored vaping products,” Whitmer said in a press release. “This is great news for our kids, our families, and our overall public health. Right now, companies are getting our kids hooked on nicotine by marketing flavors like apple juice, bubble gum, and candy. Banning these flavors is a bold step that will keep our kids healthy and safe from the harmful effects of vaping. I’m proud that Michigan has been a leader on this issue, and I’m ready to continue working to protect our kids and our public health.”
The FDA will include mint and menthol flavors in the ban, allowing only tobacco-flavored products on the market. A full guideline for the ban is expected in the next few weeks.
An exact link between vaping and illnesses, including specific brands, has yet to be discovered at this time.
