PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An investigation is underway after a fire at a unoccupied home in Portage with no working smoke detectors.
Public Safety officers were called to the 8500 block of South Westnedge Avenue near Melody Avenue just after 2 a.m. Friday where they found smoke coming from the eaves and garage at the home.
They quickly extinguished the blaze that was found in the basement.
Nobody was home at the time and investigators estimate the damages totaling around $17,000.
Portage fire units were assisted by the Texas Township Fire Department, Pride Ambulance, Comstock, and Oshtemo Fire Departments.
No firefighters were injured during the incident and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
