LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Sweet and fruity e-cigarette flavors will soon be no more in Michigan.
The move, which is expected to go into effect on Wednesday and will last for 6-months until lawmakers come up with a permanent solution, will ban businesses and online sites from selling flavored nicotine vaping products in the state.
The emergency rules also ban misleading marketing on vaping products and enforce the existing statute to prohibit vaping advertisements on billboards.
Governor Whitmer hopes this is the first step in ending teen vaping. Michigan is now the first state to implement this type of ban.
In a statement, Whitmer wrote, “As governor, my number one priority is keeping our kids safe, and right now, companies selling vaping products are using candy flavors to hook children on nicotine and misleading claims to promote the belief that these products are safe. That ends today. Our kids deserve leaders who are going to fight to protect them. These bold steps will finally put an end to these irresponsible and deceptive practices and protect Michiganders’ public health.”
Back on June 4th the governor signed bills clarifying that it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes and other nicotine products to minors.
Statistics show that from 2017 to 2018, e-cigarette use spiked 78% among high school students and 48% among middle school students.
