MACKINAW CITY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s another successful year for the 62nd annual Mackinac Bridge Walk.
For the first time in three years, participation grew to an estimated 30,000 people.
There were several different options on how to walk this year, similar to last year’s new rules. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic so walkers could start at either end, Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, and walk to the other side, or they could walk halfway and turn around, or do the longest option and walk the entire bridge to the other side and back to where they are parked.
In a statement, Mackinac Bridge Authority’s Executive Secretary Kim Nowack said, “We’re thrilled that more people chose to join us this morning for this 62-year tradition. Each year is different, with people from across the globe coming to walk the bridge, and we hope everyone enjoyed this opportunity to see the bridge from this vantage.”
Michigan State Police say the event went very well from a safety standpoint as well. The bridge was closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon during the event, as it was in 2017 and 2018.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer kicked off the Labor Day walk. She released this statement afterwards:
“The Labor Day bridge walk has become a Pure Michigan tradition. I was honored to participate this year along with thousands of Michiganders. This walk and similar events around the state today allows for us to express our gratitude towards the hard-working men and women of Michigan’s labor movement who helped build the middle class.”
