UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) – A coalition of 17 governors have sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue voicing opposition to the USDA’s proposal to essentially eliminate Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE) from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as the food stamp program.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Washington Governor Jay Inslee lead the coalition of governors. According to the USDA’s analysis, many of those impacted would include individuals with disabilities and the elderly.
The USDA’s proposal also jeopardizes access to free lunches and breakfasts at school for an estimated 500,000 low-income children.
