UNDATED, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan health officials are continuing their investigation of lung illnesses tied to vaping and e-cigarettes, according to an official press release.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday that they are investigating six cases diagnosed in the last 60 days.
All cases occurred in the Lower Peninsula in citizens ranging from 19-39. Most of them have been hospitalized.
Officials are warning e-cigarette users to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fever and/or nausea and vomiting. Officials say symptoms may occur long after use of a device.
“The severity of illness people are experiencing is alarming and we want Michiganders to be aware using e-cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous,” MDHHS state epidemiologist Sarah Lyon-Callo said in the press release. “E-cigarettes/vaping products can contain harmful chemicals that can result in damage to a user’s lungs, heart or other body systems.”
Officials have yet to identify a link between vaping and lung illness, including any particular brand of e-liquid or device.
The press release also notes that as of Aug. 23, 203 possible cases of severe respiratory disease associated with e-cigarette use have been reported in 23 states.
