LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Public Service Commission is reminding utility customers about possible scam phone calls from imposter service providers.
According to an official press release, the MPSC says that these imposters often call demanding payment via prepaid credit cards to prevent a service shutoff. Utility companies never call customers with these scare tactics.
The press release also notes that these scammers may try to use the following tactics.
- Endorse or require a prepaid debit card or gift card for payments;
- Collect payment at customers’ homes or businesses;
- Ask for Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card information by phone.
The MPSC says that utility companies never use these methods. Customers are also warned that the scammers may try to enter a home without a company identification badge, which utility workers are required to wear and display if asked.
Citizens are advised to call their banks and local police departments if they think they may have been scammed.
