PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday as it begins construction on the new Fire Station No. 2.
According to an official press release, Fire Station No. 2 is the oldest fire station in the city and is in need of maintenance.
After studying the building, the City of Portage made the decision to build an all-new Fire Station No. 2 on the site of the old one.
The new station is said to be state-of-the-art, and includes features such as sleeping quarters for both male and female firefighters, four bays containing a variety of firefighting equipment, and a size of 18,000 square feet.
“The importance of this new fire station cannot be overstated,” City Manager Laurence Shaffer said in the press release. “The safety of Portage residents and visitors to the city will be enhanced when the construction of the new Fire Station No. 2 is complete.”
The groundbreaking ceremony begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. at 6101 Oakland Drive.
