KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — PFAS have been discovered in the city of Hartford after a second set of well tests, health officials have confirmed.
The Van Buren County Health Department says that 82 wells in a contaminated area tested positive for the chemicals, and range from zero to 900 parts per trillion (PPT).
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends a safe PFAS drinking level of only 70 PPT, which 11 of the local wells tested above.
The cause of the contamination is said to be from the former site of Du-Wel Metal Products, which was closed in 2002 and later demolished after other contaminants were discovered.
Health officials are partnering to host an informational meeting today [WEDNESDAY] from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hartford High School Auditorium to discuss the tests and future plans.
Affected residents have already been given filters and bottled water.
