KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: Consumers Energy has successfully shut down the damaged gas line that caused a leak into the sewer system. Officials report that the gas levels are now at a safe level.
Consumers Energy is now working to fix the damaged line and restore gas to the area. South Burdick between Cedar and Lovell is currently still closed until the repairs are complete.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is reporting a natural gas leak in the 400 block of South Burdick Street Monday.
The leak was created by construction crews working in the area who accidentally struck an underground gas line.
The gas proceeded to leak into sewer lines, causing an evacuation on South Burdick from Cedar to South Street.
