LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Motorists may see updated warnings while traveling on I 94 in Van Buren County with plans for new signs to display suggested speed limits that can be updated as needed.
The signs were suggested by the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan State Police after completion of a road safety audit of I-94 several years ago.
The signs along the 46-mile-long section of I-94 between I-196 and U.S. 131 will be used to display suggested speed limits during adverse weather conditions and traffic incidents.
That part of I-94 receives the highest snowfall totals, and has the greatest percentage of commercial vehicles within MDOT’s Southwest Region.
During winter conditions, that section of highway has a crash rate that is 24 percent higher than other 70-mph routes, according to information in MDOT’s 5-year plan.
