BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN) – The painted rainbow crosswalks at a Battle Creek intersection that was met with controversy last month will be removed Thursday.
A city contractor will be removing the multi colored paint from all four cross walks at Capital Avenue NE and Van Buren Street E. The work is scheduled to be done by 7:00 p.m., weather permitting. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to use caution.
Nearly a dozen protestors gathered at the intersection a month ago to rally against the rainbow painting calling it a promotion of sexuality to children and a distraction to drivers.
But President of Battle Creek Pride Deana Spencer says the rainbow road was meant to promote acceptance and inclusiveness.
The crosswalks were painted for the Battle Creek Pride festival that was held a couple of weeks ago.
