LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Whitmer is joining with four other Great Lake state governors in forming a Great Lakes 2020 Presidential Agenda to provide further protection for the Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes Coalition includes governors from Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and is meant to address issues related to public health and the water supply.
“This agenda requires bold action,” Whitmer stated in a press release. “We must partner with the federal government to ensure we’re doing everything we can to protect our freshwater, which is why I’m encouraging all 2020 presidential candidates from both parties to sign on to this agenda. The shared priorities of the Great Lakes region should be the shared priorities of all Americans.”
Provisions of the agenda include increasing Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding to $475 million a year to combat issues such as pollution and invasive species, as well as addressing PFAS contamination problems.
“I am proud to sign onto an agenda that prioritizes the vitality of the Great Lakes region by investing in safe drinking water, funding critical infrastructure projects, and addressing the dangers of pollution and contamination,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz added in the press release.
