WATERVLIET TOWNSHIP MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A kayaker is dead after he went for a swim and became distressed in the Paw Paw River.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 7100 block of Red Arrow Highway in St. Joseph County’s Watervliet Township, south of South Haven.
Authorities say the 42-year-old man, identified as Chad Whittington of Coloma, was kayaking with his wife when they decided to jump into the water to swim. That’s when he became distressed and apparently went under.
First responders attempted life-saving measures on Whittington but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday to further look into the incident.
