KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Members of the Kalamazoo community are mourning the loss of a local advocate, volunteer, leader, and friend.
33-year-old Shaquita Lewis, who friends call Quanna, was shot and killed at a home on North Church Street Monday afternoon on the city’s Northside.
Many residents and even her family spoke about her accomplishments and leadership during Tuesday night’s Kalamazoo county board meeting.
Her sister Tara Lewis was one of the first from the family to speak. She thanked Commissioner Stephanie Moore for “taking her under your wing” and said, “nobody understands how happy my sister always been no matter what she go through.”
One of her daughters, 14-year-old Key’maura Lewis, also stepped up to the podium to recognize and memorialize her mother.
“My mom, Shequita Lewis, she was a counselor to everyone…she was there when anybody needed a talk, a hug, to dance, a conversation, anything…she cared for anyone who needed it, she gave love to everyone in the community and she tried her hardest so everyone could be a better them and have a better life.”
Lewis served on two advisory boards in Kalamazoo and was a county commission candidate last year. She leaves behind 9 kids, with ages ranging between 20 years-old to 5-years-old.
