DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Talks between the United Auto Workers union and the Big Three automakers kick off this week, with Ford Motor Company beginning the process.
The last time the union sat with Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler was when they negotiated a contract in 2015. Ford Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board Bill Ford Jr. said today he expects the talks to resemble past negotiations.
UAW President Gary Jones struck a more direct tone, saying that the union will take steps necessary to “protect their way of life.”
As leaders of both the union and the automakers work toward a September 14, 2019 deadline, issues on the table include the rising cost of health care, job security and the use of temporary workers. The UAW represents around 140,000 workers at Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler.
