SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A 13-year-old has drowned in Lake Michigan near South Haven Beach.
South Haven police officers and emergency personnel responded to a call Saturday around 12:30 p.m. of multiple people struggling in the water. Witnesses say that a paddleboater had rescued one adult, but one child was still in the water. About 20 minutes later, the child was located on the shore.
Despite rescue efforts on the way to the hospital, the child was pronounced dead.
The National Weather Service forecast for the day was a green flag advisory for all South Haven beaches, but was updated to yellow flag at 11:10 a.m. as wind and wave criteria changed.
Police said the victim and his family were visiting South Haven from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
