HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — South Haven emergency responders aided two women after their kayak capsized in Lake Michigan at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019. Neither of the women had been wearing life vests.
South Haven Area Emergency Services were called to help the out-of-state women, ages 18 and 19, after they had taken a two-person kayak into Lake Michigan along South Haven’s South Beach. A lakefront homeowner saw them in distress about 200 yards offshore and called 911.
Emergency responders found the two women about a half-mile south of where the homeowner had seen them. At that point, Lake Michigan waves up to 4 feet were pushing them against rocks.
One of the women suffered abrasions, but did not require medical attention. A National Weather Service beach hazards statement had been in effect when the women went kayaking.
