KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Preliminary findings show that there is no long-term water contamination in Asylum Lake after runoff from a nearby construction site sparked concerns.
The Asylum Lake Preservation Association released the test results at a public meeting Thursday evening, explaining that there appears to be no long-term environmental impact to the preserve after the storm water runoff on June 20th.
Last month’s heavy rain caused sediment overflow from Western Michigan University’s Business Technology and Research Park 2 construction site in Oshtemo to spread across Drake Road and into the lake.
In fact, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy issued a violation to the university for not having proper erosion measure in place.
In a statement WMU officials said, “All of the structural remediation that is identified in the inspection report has already been addressed and was being addressed before we received the report.”
Experts will continue to monitor the area to be sure that there are no environmental issues.
