KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Parents can now keep a better eye on their children as they drive through Kalamazoo County with the updated S.T.O.P.P.E.D. voluntary program.
S.T.O.P.P.E.D. stands for Sheriffs Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers which will notify parents via email or text message if their child is ever involved in a traffic stop by a sheriff’s deputy.
The Michigan Sheriffs Association has been using the S.T.O.P.P.E.D. system for over 14-years but now they are going digital with the program. Instead of sending letters to the parents they can be automatically notified with an email or text.
Parents can register by going to misheriff.org and then they will receive a S.T.O.P.P.E.D. sticker to put on their child’s vehicle with a special pin number so they can be notified.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says, “This could be a game changer in how we enforce traffic laws and interact with our community. This could have wide ranging positive impact on how we relate to our young drivers and their parents.”
