STURGIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Sturgis Police say additional skeletal remains have been found at the same construction site where other remains were discovered earlier.
Crews located the human skeletal remains Tuesday morning as they were digging near the area of South Nottawa Street and Bogen Road in Sturgis.
The Michigan State Police Crime Lab and the Western Michigan University Anthropology Unit helped with the investigation and the remains were taken for carbon dating and a further investigation.
Officials say that more remains were found at the same site Wednesday morning.
Stoney Summey, the Veterans Affairs Coordinator for St. Joseph County, believes that according to historical records it is possible that the remains may be of original settlers to Sturgis.
There is ongoing research to try and determine if this is accurate, and if there happens to be any Civil War connections with a possible burial site.

STURGIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police in Sturgis are reporting that human remains may have been discovered.
Officials responded to a call Tuesday morning about the possible remains, which were found near S. Nottawa Road.
Sturgis police believe the remains are many years old, and that they will be carbon dated. Some are guessing they are from Native Americans or homesteaders.
There is no criminal investigation going on and police say it is highly unlikely the remains are those of six-year-old Brittney Beers, who disappeared in 1997.
The Western Michigan University Anthropology Unit and the Michigan State Police Crime Lab will be helping with the investigation, which is currently underway.
