KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The debate over sanctuary cities continues.
Local lawmakers are taking action against a pair of Michigan House bills that would prohibit local laws that prevent officers from cooperating with federal authorities regarding an immigrant’s documentation status.
At Tuesday’s Kalamazoo County Commission meeting, Vice Chair Tracy Hall introduced a resolution opposing these bills saying that the county should send a message to the state explaining that not having legislation like this is the right thing to do.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller called the bills “concerning and overreaching” saying that they’re creating a law on something that has no concrete definition. This resolution would just ask state officials to take another look at their legislation.
Commissioner Christine Morse supported the Hall’s resolution. She says the state legislation is a waste of time and money and it’s solution without a problem.
However, Commissioner Ron Kendall was the only member who spoke against it asking why should the county take up the issue if it’s a waste of time and money for the state.
The commission will further discuss Hall’s proposed resolution at their July 16th meeting and if passed letters explaining the county’s stance would be sent to the sponsors of the bills.
