EMMET COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michiganders are being warned of a new taxpayer mail scam.
The Department of Treasury says an Emmet County citizen in northern Michigan received an official-looking letter claiming that they had an overdue tax bill.
The letter used public information to seem legitimate, threatened to seize their assets, and provided a toll-free number that the victim had to call to resolve the issue.
Officials say that all citizens with questions on taxes owed should call the Michigan Department of Treasury at (517) 636-5265 first to confirm whether the letter received was a scam or not.
