KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It looks more like a dirty swimming pool, not a football field.
Heavy rainfall throughout the night Wednesday and into Thursday morning flooded out dozens of streets, homes, and even Western Michigan University’s Waldo Stadium.
Officials took measuring tape to the outside of the field and recorded the water at about 1.3 feet deep.
Trash cans, Gatorade cups, and football equipment can be seen floating along the field. Even the digital board still reads “Welcome Campers” after Wednesday’s youth football camp. The rest of the camp is being held inside.
But this is not an unfamiliar sight. Many remember WMU’s 2017 Homecoming celebration in October when heavy thunderstorms and flooding cancelled the game between the Broncos and the Akron Zips.
A small pond can also be seen in the outfield of the Robert J. Bobb baseball stadium.
How long it will take for the water to recede and for cleanup to be completed is unknown.
