KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission is issuing a proclamation declaring June as Healthy Homes Awareness Month in Kalamazoo.
The proclamation was announced and applauded during Monday night’s commission meeting.
Commissioner David Anderson says it’s meant to educate the public about avoidable safety hazards inside the home such as lead based paint, carbon monoxide poising, radon, and even improperly stored chemicals, prescription drugs or any other substance that a child can accidentally get into.
He added that thousands of people are hurt from accidents in the home every year and hundreds of children are killed by careless mistakes when it comes to home safety.
Kalamazoo Community Development Manager Dorla Bonner says this proclamation is important as they kick off their lead hazard paint program and that they will continue their efforts to make sure everyone in the community and throughout the county are safe in their homes.
