DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – The exterior of Joe Louis Arena is coming down as crews continue the demolition of the former home of the Detroit Red Wings.
Officials say the work on the outside walls will continue through the end of July or early August. The entire process to clear the property may be done by the end of the year or in early 2020.
The City of Detroit is responsible for the demo project as part of the Chapter 9 bankruptcy agreement. The site of the arena and an adjacent parking garage were given to Financial Guaranty Insurance which took a $1.1 billion loss when the city filed for bankruptcy.
The company plans to develop the riverfront site to recoup some of that loss.
