OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker has asked his officers to investigate a complaint posted to social media about one of the county’s deputies.
In a public Facebook post Sunday, June 9, 2019, Casey Sky shared a photo of the deputy and recounted the interaction.
Sky wrote that she and her family had gone to McDonald’s for dinner, and partly to watch police responded to a crash scene nearby, on U.S. 31.
“… within 5 min of sitting down (didn’t even have time to take one bite) two cops came running in and put me in handcuffs, so tight that 45 min later, I still have marks on my wrists,” she wrote. “Apparently they thought I was some chick that ran from this accident.”
She went on to write that one of the officers was verbally disrespectful, “saying, “nice story” and smiling and literally saying ‘we know it was you, just shut up.’”
Sky wrote she “almost started crying. I thought innocent until proven guilty was a thing …”
She said when she attempted to record the interaction with her phone, the officer moved the phone out of her reach, telling her she wasn’t allowed to make a recording..
Though she wrote, “My attitude was on 100%,” she indicated that in the past, she’s been very supportive of police. She wrote that she asked the officer for his name three times, and he refused to tell her.
“They ended up getting a call saying they got the chick and let me go, but still, that s*** was ridiculous. I blew $20 on dinner that I didn’t get one bite of and I was disrespected beyond belief,” she wrote, adding that she lost faith in police, tagging her post #OttawaCountyPoliceDept.
She asked her online friends to help her find the officer’s name, writing that she was also contacting the McDonald’s to see if there was any security camera footage of the interaction. Several people responding to her post encouraged her to contact police authorities directly.
Since making her post last night, Sky has been in touch with police and filed a complaint. WHTC is attempting to contact her directly to follow this story.
Sheriff Kempker responded to WHTC’s email asking about this incident.
“I saw and was made aware of the FB posting this morning and I have assigned this to be looked at, and contact will be made with all parties involved,” he wrote. “This is in process now today.”
Any who feels they have been “unjustly stopped or questioned by law enforcement,” he said, “should contact the agency involved.”
