BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Saxton says the unidentified deputy whose cruiser struck and killed an 11-year-old boy Tuesday night while he was responding to a burglary call will not be placed on leave.
Saxton says it was an accident.
Family members have identified the boy as 11-year-old Norm Hood.
The youngster was struck around 9:30 p.m. while riding a motorized pocket bike without any lights on it on Michigan Avenue near Lenon Street in Battle Creek.
The deputy did not have his siren or lights on as he was responding to the call of a burglary in process in Springfield.
Michigan State Police are investigating the crash.
The sheriff’s office is conducting a separate internal investigation.
