LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has directed the DNR to file an emergency rule to require that domestic ships traveling through the Straits of Mackinac check to make sure they are not dragging their anchor.
A similar order was sent to the Coast Guard to monitor international shipping.
It follows an incident just over a year ago when a dragged anchor dented the Line 5 pipeline.
Studies show that a carelessly deployed anchor may be the biggest threat to the pipeline, and the Straits.
