LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Republicans in the Michigan House and Senate rushed through legislation banning Dialation and Evacuation abortions yesterday.
It’s only used when a late abortion is warranted due to defects in the fetus. This proposed change would only permit it when the mother’s life is in in jeopardy.
Berrien County Senator Kim LaSata says it’s a barbaric procedure.
Sen. Erika Geiss shamed her male colleagues for trying to ban what doctors say is the safest way to perform 2nd trimester abortions.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she will veto it, because she has always supported the right to choose. Right to Life of Michigan says if she does veto the bill, they will attempt a petition drive to let voters decide.
Federal judges have struck down similar laws in other states, and it could eventually wind up in the U.S. Supreme Court.
