LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed bills that will reform Michigan’s drug seizure laws.
The bills will require that criminal suspects be convicted first before police departments will be permitted to seize the assets that were funded by their criminal activities.
Too often, police agencies would seize the property of suspects who would be arrested and never charged or found not guilty.
Governor Whitmer says this legislation fixes that.
It was possible for innocent suspects to reclaim some of their assets, but it usually involved having to hire a lawyer and take the police agencies to court.
