COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater Township couple were arraigned on second degree child abuse charges Tuesday in Branch County District Court.
33-year-old Allen Nagle and 24-year-old Cortni Pitts were arrested following a Michigan State Police investigation.
According to authorities, the investigation started after a then two-year-old boy was allegedly slapped in the head last October at a local restaurant for taking food off his stepsister’s plate, which apparently caused a fractured skull.
Troopers found the boy was malnourished and bruised when they went to the couple’s home to investigate. Three other children in the home were found to have normal body weight.
Bond for both Nagle and Pitts has been set at $100,000. They are being held in Calhoun County because Nagle has a relative who works as a Branch County Corrections Office.
Probable cause hearings are scheduled for May 21, with preliminary examinations set for May 28, 2019.
