HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Israel Torres, a 17-year-old West Ottawa student, knew about Dutch Dance — but until a friend invited him to join the dance, he was more spectator than participant. Until this year.
That, he said, is when a friend of his suggested he try out, which he did. At first, he said, he only wore six pairs of socks with his wooden shoes, but he liked the dancing and decided to go for it — adding those essential two additional pairs of sock, to keep his klompen from flying off his feet, at some unsuspecting person’s head. It’s an occupational hazard all experienced Dutch dancers know, and actively try to avoid.
Torres stepped up as a substitute dancer Monday for the Centennial Park performances, wearing a rented suit, but said he plans to get his own outfit for next year’s festival.
It turns out Dutch dance is a great workout, he said — and it’s helped him be more competitive in football games with his friends.
Tulip Time runs through May 12th in Holland.
